Privacy and Security in the Digital Era: AAIP Tips for Children and Adolescents

In a world where technology plays an essential role in our daily lives, the Agency for Access to Public Information (AAIP) has developed the guide Our Digital World, a resource specifically designed to protect the personal information of children and adolescents.

The guide begins by explaining what personal and sensitive data means, emphasizing the importance of protecting this information in digital environments. It also delves into individuals’ rights while navigating the internet, introducing the concept of “Digital Citizenship,” which promotes ethical, respectful, and responsible behavior in virtual spaces. Additionally, it explores concepts such as digital footprint and digital identity, helping users understand how these are built from the information we voluntarily share and the data that third parties generate about us. Finally, the guide warns about the risks associated with artificial intelligence and everyday internet activities, providing strategies to address them safely.

To help protect the personal data of children and adolescents, the guide offers the following key recommendations for teachers, parents, and guardians when discussing these topics with them:

  • Explain that it is not necessary to share all their personal information in online profiles.
  • Discuss with them about the importance of deciding what information they want to make public, and teach them how to set privacy settings for each of their profiles on different platforms.
  • Inform them that they should not talk or share information with strangers online.
  • Provide them with tools to identify suspicious emails or messages, avoiding unintentional sharing of information.
  • Assist children and adolescents in configuring their devices and digital platform accounts to ensure safe browsing.

As a complement, the AAIP has also published a Pedagogical Guide, which includes educational proposals and activities designed to work with children and adolescents on personal data protection in digital environments. This material can be easily downloaded for implementation in schools, homes, or other educational spaces by clicking here.
