As of May 1, 2026, official fees before the Argentine National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) began to be updated monthly based on inflation through the new UMAPI system, replacing a relatively static fee structure. This change introduces a more dynamic approach to the management of trademarks and other intangible assets, where planning and strategic monitoring are becoming increasingly important.
Our partner Celia Lerman collaborated with the prestigious publication World Trademark Review (WTR) on an article addressing the implementation of the new fee system and its impact in Argentina. The article examines the increase in official fees and the incorporation of UMAPI as an inflation-adjusted fee unit, which will result in monthly variations in costs related to trademarks, patents, and other industrial property procedures.
Celia shared her perspective on some of the effects already being observed in the market, including the acceleration of filings ahead of the fee increases and the challenges that a monthly fee adjustment system may pose for rights holders with large trademark portfolios or ongoing protection strategies.
In this increasingly volatile environment, we highlight the importance of proactive and strategic IP management, including forward planning, flexible budgeting, and continuous monitoring of costs and priorities.
We thank World Trademark Review for featuring our opinion on this significant shift in the Argentine intellectual property landscape.
