Argentina Adopts New Classification for Industrial Designs and Models: Effective January 1, 2025

On December 12, 2024, Resolution 491/2024 was published in the Official Bulletin, through which the Argentine government adopted the 15th edition of the International Classification of Industrial Designs and Models.

This update, effective January 1, 2025, modifies the categories of products that can be registered as industrial designs and models, in accordance with the Locarno Agreement, to which Argentina adhered in 2008 through Law 26.402.

Since 2017, a Committee of Experts has been in charge of updating the classification, ensuring that it remains aligned with technological advances and trends across various sectors.

The classification contemplates different classes and subclasses and serves both for the background search prior to registration, as well as for registering an industrial model or design. In the case of simple (not multiple) registrations, the Directorate of Industrial Designs and Models is in charge of classifying the design or model.
