Gabriela Szlak: Co-Chair of the IAPP KnowledgeNet (KN) Buenos Aires Chapter

Our partner Gabriela Szlak, head of the IT, Data Privacy & AI team, has once again been appointed Co-Chair of the IAPP KN Buenos Aires Chapter for the 2026 term.

IAPP KN Chapters are local communities of professionals specializing in privacy, personal data protection, AI, and related fields. Their purpose is to foster knowledge sharing, ongoing professional development, and networking among individuals who work or conduct research in these areas at the local level.

These are collaborative spaces driven by local volunteer leaders, in this case, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, who organize events focused on practical, regulatory, and strategic issues related to data privacy and digital responsibility. Activities typically include technical talks, panel discussions, workshops, and networking events, often featuring experts from the public, private, and academic sectors.

Over the past two years in which Gabriela co-led the Buenos Aires KN Chapter, a number of events were held. Among them was an event at the University of Palermo focused on “Personal Data Protection in Argentina: Management, Perspectives, and Challenges,” with the participation of key figures such as Beatriz de Anchorena, head of the AAIP (Agency for Access to Public Information). This event addressed essential topics including cross-border personal data flows, the role of Convention 108+ within the Argentine regulatory framework, and the importance of mainstreaming data protection in the development and use of AI.

Another notable event was the panel “Biometrics 360 and Privacy: Challenges and Opportunities for Companies,” held at Torcuato Di Tella University, which examined biometric technologies applied to practices such as workplace access, identity verification, and fraud prevention, from a personal data protection perspective.

In addition, a virtual event titled “Women in Privacy: Latin America” was held, jointly organized by the KN Chapters of Bogotá and Buenos Aires. On that occasion, women leaders shared their career paths and professional experiences, and discussed broader challenges faced by women, such as managing multiple personal and professional roles and the impact this has on the time available for the continuous training required by roles associated with new technologies.

The final annual meeting of the Buenos Aires KnowledgeNet Chapter this year was held in a setting focused on dialogue and the close of the year’s activities, with the participation of members of the local community. This event, hosted at Mercado Libre’s offices, focused on the role of the DPO and provided a space to share lessons learned, reflect on the key privacy and data issues of the year, and strengthen professional networks among attendees.

We congratulate Gabriela on this appointment by the IAPP and on her continued commitment to promoting data protection and privacy in Argentina and across the region.
