Recently, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced a significant update to trademark registration fees. This measure responds to the need for additional funding to implement the USPTO’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan.
The plan aims to improve the quality and speed of trademark examination, while also implementing initiatives to protect all rights holders. The new fees will also allow the USPTO to continue fostering innovation and global competitiveness, ensuring a more transparent system for trademark owners worldwide.
These fee adjustments are based on recommendations gathered during a public hearing held in June 2023, organized by the Trademark Public Advisory Committee (TPAC).
Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO, stated: “Our updated trademark fees will allow us to develop news ways to fight fraud, support our colleagues and stakeholders with reliable IT infrastructure, and enhance our work to reduce trademark pendency”.
The fee increase will be implemented starting January 18, 2025. New trademark application fees will see a 40% increase, while renewal and use declaration fees will rise by up to 50%.
