“IPFS” vs. “YPF”: The Court of Appeals Reversed the INPI and Authorized the Registration

In July 2026, the Federal Civil and Commercial Court of Appeals reversed, by majority, a decision of the Argentine National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) that had upheld the oppositions filed by YPF S.A. against the registration of the word mark trademark "IPFS", applied for by Protocol Labs, Inc. in Classes 9 and 42 (software, distributed data storage and computer services). The case brings two worlds into conflict: the energy industry and decentralized technology.
