The Chamber of Deputies of the Nation approved the Front Labeling Law

The Chamber of Deputies approved the Front Labeling Law, which aims to warn on food packaging about the excess of components that may be harmful to health, such as sugars, sodium and saturated fats.

The most important points are:

  • The seals must appear in the form of black octagons, with white borders and capital letters, with a size of not less than 5% of the surface of the front face of the container and may not be totally or partially covered by another element.
  • The regulation covers the entire production chain, from the manufacture to the commercialization and importation of beverages and food, extending to boxes, crates, and any type of packaging.
  • It is forbidden to include children’s characters, animations, cartoons, celebrities, athletes or mascots, interactive elements and the delivery or promise of delivery of prizes and gifts.

The purpose of this regulation is to provide the population with accurate information about the products they consume, and thus have a healthier diet.
